Celebrity chefs, winemakers and dignitaries in Yountville – the Napa Valley town known for its fine restaurants and Michelin stars – will salute almost a thousand residents of the local Veterans Home – average age 88 – when they collaborate on a multi-course, gourmet feast in honor of Veterans Day. The highly-anticipated 10th Annual Celebrity Chefs Veterans Day Luncheon on November 5 will kick off a week of festivities, including movie nights, dancing and an ice-cream social.

Spear-headed by Chef Bob Hurley of Hurley’s Restaurant & Bar, and the Yountville Chamber of Commerce, the 10th anniversary luncheon will feature the culinary talents of Chef Ian deRouin of Bistro Jeanty; Chef Victor Scargle of Lucy, the restaurant at Bardessono; Chef Brandon Rosen of Redd; Chef Kevin Miller of The Vintage Estate; Chef Perry Hoffman of étoile at Domaine Chandon; Chef Cary Delbridge of Brix Restaurant; and, Chef Douglas Gregory of Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery.

“Preparing this meal is a small gesture of our gratitude to the men and women who have served our country, and who are such an important part of our community,” said Chef Hurley. “Because most of them cannot make the trip to our restaurants, we decided to bring our restaurants to them.

The Veterans Home of California in Yountville houses 966 United States military veterans, a third of the town’s population. Many of them are on fixed incomes and unable to afford the upscale, nationally-acclaimed restaurants that make Yountville a culinary destination.

“This is a once-a-year experience for most of our residents,” explained Public Information Officer Terri Mejorado. “They appreciate so much that the chefs and the town donate their time, staff and culinary creations to celebrate Veterans Day in their honor.”

The three-course, gourmet meal will be served restaurant-style by dozens of volunteers and restaurant staff, and accompanied by some of Napa Valley’s finest wines, including wines from Domaine Chandon, Cornerstone Cellars, Girard, Trefethen Family Vineyards, Black Stallion Estate Winery, Goosecross Cellars, Clos du Val, Keever Vineyards, and Paradigm.

Scientic Grower Truffle Cultivation Seminar with truffle orchard tour and dog training demo

Designed for current and prospective truffle growers, this in-depth seminar provides a detailed technical overview of the science and methodology, as well as the economics involved in truffle cultivation. Presented by American Truffle Company’s Chief Scientist Dr. Paul Thomas and Managing Director Robert Chang, you will learn about the myriad of scientific factors one must consider to successfully grow truffles.

Dogs sniff things out! There is no better machine to sniff out mature truffles than the highly sensitive nose and the extreme mobility of a properly trained dog. Just like rigorous science is required for successful truffle cultivation, a scientific approach is key to effective truffle dog training. In the Friday seminar, ATC’s Master Dog Trainer Alana McGee will cover the science of canine truffle scent location and its practical implementation. On Saturday, Alana will demonstrate the main principles at Robert Sinskey Vineyard’s Truffle Orchard.

Includes: Scientific Grower Truffle Cultivation Seminar and buffet lunch on Friday, plus truffle orchard tour and dog training demonstration on Saturday. Winery Truffle Lunch at Peju Province Winery on Saturday available à la carte.

A lot of us are trying to simplify; we don’t need more stuff. Happily, more and more people are gifting enlightening and inspirational experiences instead.

Lucky recipients of gifts from Yountville, Napa Valley, could reign over a winery for a day and depart with wine that they create; be surprised with their own restaurant for a night and its star-studded chef; dip into an cosseting wine-themed spa experience; drift away in a hot air balloon for two with views all the way to San Francisco Bay; or immerse themselves in chocolate alongside their own personal chocolate chef.

Here are some suggestions for stimulating experiences (and a few other inspiring goodies) from Wine Country, that your readers might enjoy giving, or receiving. Please let me know if I can get you images or more information on any of these gift ideas, all of which are sure to sparkle under the holiday tree.

The holiday season is a magical time, and spending an afternoon in a 13th century inspired Tuscan castle and winery in the heart of Napa Valley can make for a truly magical winter food and wine pairing adventure. Add live holiday music, Italian breads fresh from the oven in the courtyard, a display of holiday wreaths made by local charities, and even Scrooge would turn his “bah humbug” into a “Buon Natale!” All of this wine country holiday cheer will be taking place on Saturday, December 6 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for Castello di Amorosa’s Holiday Wreaths for Charity. The Castello will be hosting nine Napa Valley charities, and guests can help to spread the spirit of the season by donating to these worthy organizations while enjoying the festivities of the day.

The Castello is located at 4045 N. St. Helena Highway in Calistoga (94515).

“It is rewarding to contribute to local charities that provide essential community service,” said Georg Salzner, President of Castello di Amorosa. “We are looking forward to a festive day filled with giving, great food and enticing music.”

Non-profit organizations from throughout the Napa Valley will display hand-made holiday wreaths in the Castello’s Courtyard. General admission is $20 per person and includes an educational wine tasting of the Castello’s Italian-style wines; educational tours of the Castello, including the wine fermentation rooms, cellars and caves, are $35 per person and also includes an educational wine tasting from the barrel followed by a wine tasting in an underground tasting room. All of the proceeds from the wreath raffle will be donated to these local charities.  Holiday Wreaths for Charity is open to the general public.

Live music will fill the Castello throughout the day, including music from Mr. B, Chris Pucci, Cory Davis and the Holly & Ivy Carolers.

While attending the event, guests are encouraged to learn how wine is made and paired with food and donate to the charities, which include:

  • American Red Cross of Napa County
  • Boys and Girls Club of St. Helena
  • Boys and Girls Club of Calistoga
  • Molly’s Angels
  • Salvador Elementary School
  • Red Cross of Napa Valley
  • Land Trust of Napa County
  • Calistoga Elementary School
  • The Castello Cares.

About Castello di Amorosa:

Following fourteen years of construction, Dario Sattui opened Castello di Amorosa in April of 2007.  Situated in the hills above Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa – a family-owned business – produces world-class wines including popular white and red wines as well as proprietary Italian-inspired blends, including Il Barone, La Castellana and Il Passito. Wines are sold only at the winery.  The castle winery was made with brick, wood and iron imported from Europe and combined with over 8,000 tons of local, Napa Valley stone.  Today, Castello di Amorosa, a popular Napa Valley destination, offers a variety of wine tasting and winery tours in a unique Tuscan castle setting.

Three years; it may seem like a long time for some but I feel that it happened in a blink of an eye. When GEV started, it was mostly out of a state of desperation – a desire to prove something. The main objective was genuine but the foundation was shallow – a little rough around the edges, to tell you the truth, but time allowed us to improve and better ourselves and yet we’re still a work in progress. To be the platform I really envisioned the magazine to be is to be the voice of unsung heroes, gifted artists and small business owners who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to showcase their accomplishments. I found joy revealing those hidden gems by providing them a place of encouraging, nurturing recognition.

As we approach the holidays, we are able to reflect on and celebrate the little milestones we’ve achieved through the years – but we’re really just starting. Moving forward we aim to work with people who both inspire us and the loyal readers we’ve gained along the way. I must add that I’m slowly beginning to understand what our role should be in society. We’d like to be successful but in such a way that we maintain our integrity and values of our moral obligation. We’d be grateful to have an immense impact sans the frenzy. In a world filled with media-glorified personalities and celebrity adulation, my goal is to stay true to who we are and be consistent in celebrating the human spirit.  If you know anyone who is making a difference in your community and deserves to have their stories told, please nominate this individual and send us an email.

The one thing I am most thankful for this season is the family I’ve made with the people who’ve contributed to the magazine. It goes without saying that this passion project wouldn’t have survived this far without the dedication and countless hours to make GEV possible. Thank you for your continued faith in our journey. You make it happen.

His experience with food and wine combined with his entertaining style make for a fun 2-hour class that will inspire and educate guests.

Keith Idle has been the cheesemonger at V. Sattui for 30 years and is very knowledgeable about artisan cheeses from around the world and the techniques used to make them. This culinary “dream team” will lead 20 students in each class through some delicious discoveries.

Long considered the culinary and viticulture heart of Napa Valley, the Town of Yountville is the ideal venue for what is billed as the ultimate luxury get-away event. With its world-class restaurants and lodging, and many of the valley’s most celebrated wineries, Yountville combines a small-town ambiance with a sophisticated lifestyle rooted in food, wine, arts, unrivaled scenery and access to outdoor pursuits.

“Yountville is home to this event because it’s the perfect showcase for this unsurpassed offering of food, wine and musical talent,” said Cindy Saucerman, President and CEO of the Yountville Chamber of Commerce. “We are already known as the heart of the Napa Valley, where small-town ambiance meets sophisticated Wine Country lifestyle, so it makes perfect sense that our town would host this intimate and world-class food, wine and music experience.”

Yountville Live provides a limited number of attendees unparalleled access to top recording artists, winemakers, and world- renowned chefs during a four-day event consisting of private and exclusive acoustic concerts, wine tastings, sumptuous meals, and private winery tours. The Napa Valley’s finest resorts and intimate inns are host to attendees who enjoy a total immersion in music, wine and food – not to mention Yountville’s spectacular Wine Country setting and breathtaking scenery. No other public show offers the access and intimacy afforded attendees by Yountville Live.

FOOD. Yountville Live features numerous local, national and celebrity executive chefs. Attendees enjoy world class foods, exclusive cooking demonstrations, a variety of local artisan foods and farm fresh products throughout the weekend.

WINE. Yountville Live breaks out into different tracks over the course of the weekend, providing smaller, more intimate tasting events for guests. Several events are hosted at wineries that are among the Napa Valley’s most notable and feature acoustic performances, tastings and food-and-wine pairings.

MUSIC. Yountville Live features intimate performances by multi-platinum and up-and-coming musicians, with a special focus on emerging talent. The small performing venues make it possible for guests to make personal connections and share memorable experiences with the artists in a social environment.

Grgich Hills Estate celebrates the 35th anniversary of The Great Chicago Chardonnay Showdown

Chicago-Skyline-Banner

In 1980 “The Great Chicago Showdown” brought together 221 of the best Chardonnays from around the world.  Chardonnays from France, California, New York and even Bulgaria were collected for a historic first, the largest blind tasting of that time of one single varietal. The first vintage that Miljenko “Mike” Grgich crafted at Grgich Hills, his 1977 Chardonnay, emerged triumphant with a first place ribbon and the Chicago Tribune called it “The best Chardonnay in the world”!  With this win so close on the heels of the famous 1976 Paris Tasting, where the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that Mike made took first place over some of the best French white Burgundies and American Chardonnays, he soon became affectionately known as the “King of Chardonnay.”

In 2015, Grgich Hills Estate will celebrate the 35th anniversary of this historic tasting and its legacy in Chardonnay with vintner dinners across the country, a photo contest, a new mobile application launch and much more, all culminating into two festive gala dinners. The first will be in Chicago on May 7, 2015 and the second in the Napa Valley at the winery on May 16, 2015.  Mike Grgich believes this is a significant event not just for Chicago and Grgich Hills but for all of America since it proves that “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

Grgich Hills will launch “The Great Chicago Chardonnay Showdown” celebration starting on January 15, 2015. “This is a great opportunity for our winery not only to celebrate my father’s many accomplishments but also Chardonnay, a varietal that is enjoyed and loved by so many people,” says Violet Grgich.  As Mike explains, “There is no scientific formula for making great wines.  You make wines with your heart. You pour your love into them and nurture them like children, and transmit to them the richness of your spirit.”  That philosophy is the very heartbeat of Grgich Hills Estate.

The winery is partnering with publications such as Robb Report, Chicago Tribune, Saveur Magazine, Modern Luxury Publication Group, and Food & Wine Magazine to unveil this great celebration. In addition, Grgich Hills will launch the “Taste the Legacy Photo Contest,” where consumers are encouraged to engage with the winery via social media and upload their best photos while enjoying Grgich Hills Estate wines. Each month will feature a different theme with the chance for consumers to win prizes on a monthly basis. The Grand Prize winner will win the ultimate grand prize – a trip to the beautiful Napa Valley for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Grgich Hills Estate winery and a private dinner with Mike and Violet Grgich.

This year we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of this historic tasting with events around the country, including a gala at the winery.

Kaye Cloutman

Read Issue 15!

Spring is always a time for new beginnings and I have to admit that in this issue more than any other, the pleasure of blossoming in the company of so many women powerhouses in various industries has truly given the GEV team a sense of significance. Fresh from the 8th Annual Pebble Beach Food and Wine, my spirit is renewed. The matchless tandem of Food & Wine Magazine publisher Christina Grdovic and Editor in chief Dana Cowin spearheaded a movement in the culinary world where women are deservingly celebrated as the kitchen champions that they truly are.

How fabulous it was, to be able to interact with Michelin star chef Dominique Crenn & Food & Wine Best New Chef Stephanie Izard, along with revered female chefs from all over the country including Alex Guarnaschelli, Gabi Quinonez, Laura Werlin, Brooke Williamson, Angela Tamura, Elizabeth Falkner, Anita Lo, Jenn Louis, Cindy Pawlcyn, Yulanda Santos, Antonia Lofaso, Elizabeth Blau, Lissa Doumani and Liza Shaw. Despite their celebrity stature, these women bring comfort back with their food not only because they are masters behind the stove, but because their persona and passions nurture the soul as well.

I would be remiss to not mention how the ladies have played a huge role in the oenophiles’ realm too, especially in the world-class region of the Napa Valley. In this issue, mother and daughter tandem Amelia and Dalia Ceja of Ceja Vineyards show us why we should be getting more excited about the combination of wine, women and diverse ethnicity. Mixed together, this could actually be a perfect combination for future generations to toast, and their refreshingly fun, delicious and approachable style make drinking every glass feel almost like having a fiesta in your mouth.

DCIM103GOPROG0038004.

There’s something sincerely exceptional when women combine forces and we at GEV intuitively know this magic from experience. You see, it is a constant challenge for us to provide a platform which upholds and promotes gender equality but make no mistake – our publication will always be a level playing field for both sexes. I guess we lucked out too because it really helps that the men we work with continue to support and believe in us as well.

Gloria Ferrer Partners Event 2015 m.woolsey-38_1045

By Kathryn Holland Besser
Photography by M. Woolsey

On a warm afternoon in late June, we received an intimate look inside the newly remodeled Visitor Center at Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards in Sonoma. While their wines are authentic California, their culture is a charismatic blend of vibrant Spanish tradition and understated Sonoma County gracefulness. Led by Gloria’s son, Pedro Ferrer, and his serene and gracious wife, Begoña, the tour covered the evolution of Gloria Ferrer in California. Along the way, guests sipped Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Blanc, made from 100% Chardonnay and a truly delightful 2004 Carneros, which is half Pinot Noir, half Chardonnay grapes. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes and taking anywhere from three to ten years to make, both sparkling wines were crisp with light fruit and a long finish. They were a perfect accompaniment to the lively stories that unfolded.

According to Pedro, the original building was created in the Catalan style but was rather dark and heavy. Today, the new Visitor Center is light, airy and reminiscent of modern Barcelona, where the Ferrers live. It is full of history, both near and far, providing fascinating insights into a unique dynasty, led by the indomitable Gloria Ferrer.

Begoña Ferrer shared the charming story of her Mother-in-Law’s famous glassware collection. Gloria began collecting cava (champagne) glasses around the time of her marriage to Jose Ferrer. In Gloria’s recounting, her passion for collecting began rather innocently, “It was in Venice, in 1956, that my uncle gave me the idea while sitting at the dinner table in the Piazza San Marco. My father quietly got up and went into an antique shop near the Cathedral and returned with a beautiful red Murano crystal glass with a golden dauphine in the stem. He gave me the glass and a kiss. The collection had begun.”

Currently, there are over 2,000 pieces, predominantly housed in Spain and varying in age and color. Some are engraved and cut; some are painted or enameled. The stemware ranges from simple to ornate, from transparent to opaque, from molded to blown and from antique to modern, all stemming from Gloria’s belief that a collection should be a little bit of everything. It is estimated that the oldest vessel dates back to Ancient Syria (B.C.E.). Although Gloria particularly favors glasses with braided stems or those with a teardrop of air at the base, one of her most prized pieces is a humble glass commemorating the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. It came to Gloria as a gift from Pedro and Begoña’s son, who insisted upon using his own money to purchase an offering for his grandmother’s collection. Filled with pride on her grandson’s thoughtful gesture, Gloria declared it to be one of her all-time favorite acquisitions.

The renovation of the Visitor’s Center allowed Gloria Ferrer winery to triple the glassware collection on display in the Tour Alcove Room; the collection housed in Sonoma now numbers more than 100. As Gloria is still actively browsing antique shops all over the world, it is likely the Sonoma assemblage will continue to grow.

The aptly named Vista Room, which is adjacent to the main Tasting room, features sweeping views of the Carneros winegrowing appellation and a long table to feast on a brand new tasting menu. A glass of Gloria Ferrer sparkling or estate varietal wine may be paired with savory and sweet local artisan delicacies including a local cheese plate (featuring Cow Girl Creamery Mt. Tam Triple Cream, Redwood Hill Terra Goat Cheese, Cypress Grove Purple Haze Goat Cheese, Marcona almonds, Early Girl Tomato Jam, seasonal fruit and water crackers), a Spanish cheese plate (featuring Montcerda, a creamy cows’ milk cheese, Manchego, a 12-month aged sheep’s milk cheese, Idiazabal, a subtly smoked sheep’s milk cheese aged 8 months, quince paste, Marcona almonds, seasonal fruit and water crackers), a charcuterie plate (Serrano ham, chorizo, fennel salami, Gloria Ferrer Estate Grown olive oil, whole grain mustard, caper berries and water crackers), truffle potato chips, olives and house-made spicy almonds (Gloria’s Almonds). ABOUT HALL

HALL produces critically acclaimed artisan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, available to taste and buy at two tasting room and winery locations in Napa Valley. Owned by Craig and Kathryn Walt Hall, its vineyard collection features five Certified Organic estates producing classic Bordeaux varietals. Each vintage, Director of Winemaking Steve Leveque crafts 16 distinct Cabernet Sauvignon wines which demonstrate the unique characteristics and diversity of Napa Valley. HALL’s highly rated wines include the 2008 “Kathryn Hall” Cabernet Sauvignon that earned #2 of the “Top 100” Wines in Wine Spectator and its 2010 ‘Exzellenz’ was awarded 100 points by Robert Parker, Wine Advocate. Since the first vintage in 2002, over 85 HALL wines have been rated 94 points and above. HALL employs high-density plantings and small vine viticulture combined with two cutting-edge, gravity-flow wineries to produce the highest quality wines. In addition, the HALL St. Helena winery was the first LEED® Gold Certified Winery in the State of California in 2009 and earned another LEED® Gold certification for its high tech production facility and modern tasting room in 2014, making HALL pioneers in the use of green buildings for the wine industry. K. LAZ WINE COLLECTION, a beautifully appointed Tasting Room and retail shop from former Dean & DeLuca Wine Director and industry insider Kerrin Laz, is opening in Yountville, CA. One of Napa Valley’s most beloved wine personalities and trusted consultants, Kerrin is making her collection of more than 500 wine labels – including some of the most coveted and hard-to-come-by bottles and her favorite undiscovered gems – available to the public for tastings and for purchase at the new shop. With a prime location on Washington Street in downtown Yountville, just steps away from Napa Valley hot spots like Ad Hoc by Thomas Keller, Redd by Richard Reddington, and Bardessonno Hotel & Spa, K. LAZ WINE COLLECTION is sure to become one of Napa Valley’s top wine destinations.

During her 12 years tasting, sourcing and bringing to market the best wines for Dean & DeLuca, Kerrin has established personal relationships with nearly every California winemaker worth knowing, and has garnered a reputation as a leading authority on wines in the region. Kerrin has developed a loyal following of discerning wine connoisseurs and has built collections for some of the country’s top CEOs, celebrities, athletes and other influencers. Her ability to secure limited allocations from cult labels such as Screaming Eagle, Abreu Vineyards and Dana Estate (which all have waitlists just to get on the mailing lists) makes K. LAZ the only place in Napa Valley – and possibly the country – where guests can freely taste these labels in one sitting without the high cost of purchasing full bottles.
In addition to working with Napa Valley’s most revered vintners and winemakers, Kerrin is equally in tune with what’s new and undiscovered in micro-winery labels. The result is a collection of wines typically not found under one roof, let alone in one tasting, with bottles like Kata, Keplinger and Fait-Main. “I want my guests to be able to experience wines from both the younger, more esoteric winemakers, as well the legacy cults that have paved the way for wine in Napa Valley,” says Kerrin. “It’s an honor to be able to offer this diversity of wines and build dynamic collections for my clients, no matter how big or small.”K. LAZ is also the only place in Yountville to offer Mad Fritz Beer, made in neighboring St. Helena by vintner, winemaker and now brewmaster Nile Zacherle. The beer is served as a palate cleanser at the end of select tastings, and available to purchase by the glass. The current offering is the Kolsch-style Peacock and the Crane, and the selection will change seasonally.

Kerrin has curated three sit-down tasting experiences, available by appointment only: The Taster (with wines that average $65 per bottle), The Artisan (with wines that average $100 per bottle) and The Cult (with some of the most sought-after wines averaging $175 per bottle). Each tasting is available in a collection of six wines starting at $65 per person, or as a half flight of three wines starting at $35 per person. Along with her expert wine knowledge, Kerrin is connected to wine country’s culinary scene. She has partnered with Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery to offer a lunch tasting option where guests will be guided through a one-hour flight of four wines paired with box lunch from Bouchon ($85 per guest) – and K. LAZ will soon offer a monthly dinner tasting series in collaboration with prominent local chefs.

In addition to the retail, tasting and entertaining components, K. LAZ WINE COLLECTION offers its wines through a national subscription-based Wine Club. Members will receive six bottles of Kerrin’s favorite new wines two or four times per year. The subscriptions are available in three different price points: $300 for six wines that average $50 per bottle; $500 for six wines that average $85 per bottle; or $1000 for six wines that average $165 per bottle. Additional Wine Club member benefits include complimentary wine tastings at the shop, discounts on lunch and dinner pairings as well as bottle purchases, and Kerrin’s personal concierge services including dining reservations and winery tours throughout Napa Valley.
Designed by anm design studios, K LAZ’S 800 square foot interior is clean and bright, featuring whitewashed walls, hardwood floors and wood and leather furnishings. Anchoring the space is a rectangular tasting table with 12 seats for guests, and along one wall is a freestanding stainless steel wine display. Fresh flowers and terrariums from Napa Valley’s Evermore Flowers will be displayed from wooden shelving throughout the shop and will be available for purchase. A large white chandelier hand-crafted from seashells hangs overhead, contrasting beautifully with the rustic décor. Rich burnt orange leather club chairs and Kerrin’s own Napa Valley landscape photography (also available for purchase) add a pop of color and warmth to the black and white interior.
Address: 6484 Washington Street, Suite C, Yountville, CA 94599
Hours: Tastings by appointment only, starting at 10:00 AM daily. Retail shop open from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
